In this lesson, I’ll introduce you to the foundational principles of visual composition, the art of combining multiple visual elements together. You can apply these principles to any group of design elements, but today we’ll focus on shape.

Remember that your goal as a visual designer is to create something that:

  1. Communicates an idea.
  2. Guides a user’s experience.
  3. Evokes a feeling.

The best way to achieve the first two goals is by ✨ creating hierarchy ✨. Creating hierarchy is when you make certain design elements on the page appear more important than the others. Remember the tour posters from earlier?

The reason why these posters are effective is because the elements have a clear hierarchy: the popular artists are bigger and more indie artists are smaller.
